Learn oil painting with Julie Devine. This class is for beginners and will focus on still-life floral arrangements.
Deepen your oil painting skills in this intermediate class. We’ll continue with the basics of color mixing and paint application as we translate three-dimensional subjects into two-dimensional works. Class size is limited to seven to ensure participants get individual attention. Students must bring their own supplies, and a supply list will be provided.

To reach your viewer with a compelling painting, you’ll need to provide an engaging composition and path for the eye to travel through your work. In this workshop, we’ll explore and analyze various compositions in works of art. We’ll also consider some non-examples and come up with solutions to improve them.

Want to get outdoors to paint in the open air but don’t know where to start? This class is for you! Learn about the challenges facing outdoor painters, and how to prepare for them. We’ll talk about logistics – what to bring, how to stay warm and dry, ways to prioritize safety, and how to work with the wind and changing light! We’ll look at a variety of plein air painting systems (French easels, pochade boxes on tripods, DIY cigar boxes, sketchbox easels) and discuss the pros and cons of each. We’ll even try out a landscape-friendly palette that requires few colors but yields a big impact. We’ll wrap up with a Cinco de Mayo celebration.

I teach an ongoing beginner oil painting class each Saturday from noon to 2pm in my Ballard studio. Maximum class size is four people, so this is a great opportunity to learn in a small class with more 1:1 attention.
